One of the largest groups of animals is the insect group. These animals have six legs and three parts to their bodies. Many insects cause problems to humans. Some carry diseases. Others are a problem because they eat the foot that farmers grow. But there are insects we need, like bees and butterflies, because they help flowers and fruit to grow, so they are men’s helpers. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children then will grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they will become dull and unintelligent. (Adapted from Bernard Seal.) Book Great times 3. |

Carnival in Rio is a mad show. It is an escape into the world whose rules are fantasy, music, and dancing. It is not for the shy. The giant parade of samba schools is a great street theatre, a Hollywood show in real life. Each of the schools represents a district and selects a theme for the costumes, and a special samba. Each also has a “bateria”, a marching band of percussion instruments and drums. |

WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU ASSOCIATE TO SPECIFIC THINGS? It’s funny how certain sights, smell, tastes, or even sounds can bring back memories of your childhood. For example, the smell and taste of fresh chocolate chip cookies always remind me of my mom because she used to make them a lot when I was little. And hearing Britney Spears’ song, “Toxic” makes me think of high school and the friends I had there. And let’s see…when I see a beagle puppy, I think of my first dog. De was a beagle mix named Bonzo. I can clearly remember when I got him. I was so excited. It was my eighth birthday. He was so cute!! (Natasha-California) (Source; Student Book Open Mind 3 – Mickey Rogers; Macmillan-2010) |
When you want to become really good at something, you have to try much harder than if you just want to be fairly competent at it. It doesn’t really matter what you are learning; the principles ate same. People who reach and advanced level in a sport, a language, or any other skill have several characteristics in common. First, they push themselves beyond their comfort zone. In other words, they take risks and try things a little beyond their abilities. Second, they don’t give up during periods when they don’t progress. Third and finally, they measure their progress often by competing or taking exams, and they learn from their mistakes.
